Bertrum

Status: Elite Livery

Height: 16.3 hh
YOB: 1990
Gender: Gelding
Colour: Bay
Breed: 7/8ths TB
Owner: Sarah Boote

Bertrum, officially called “Bertie Killingshurst”, is a horse born in the “purple” with two parents that have exceptional records for producing offspring that compete at the very highest echelons in Eventing.

To give you an idea, his half-brother (from the same sire) Midnight Monarch ridden by Andrew Hoy, won Badminton 2006 whilst his other half-brother from the same dam (much more unusual) Lord Killingshurst ridden by Andrew Nicholson, came second.

Bertrum may have showed all the promise but he never made the grade and his patient owner who had bought him as a two year old permanently loaned Bertrum to us in 2003.   Thereafter our Lorna evented him for a few years before realising that Bert only wanted a peaceful life and is happiest when allowed to potter around at Lavant!

Bert is now thoroughly loved by Gill & Sarah Boote, he has the best life any horse could dream of, daily cuddles, scratches and carrots!  He recently won the combined training competition with Sarah last month (April 2015)! Showing you’re only as old as you feel :)

Banjo

Working Livery

YOB:              2008
Gender:        Gelding
Colour:         Black
Breed:           Irish
Owner:         Alice Parker

Banjo is a useful type in that he has quality with substance and is a great size – a size that is always difficult to find because horses are rarely bred to be around 15 hands.  A sensible, workmanlike fellow, he has done quite a lot of hunting, hunter trialled and competed in show jumping competitions.  He is good to hack, box, shoe, clip, etc. and has been guaranteed bomb proof by his previous owner – another rarity in itself!

Wow what a hit Banjo has been, a very popular horse with a lovely sweet nature and willingness to please. He’s taken part in several activities, from Pony Owning Days to the BHS Stage 1 Adult course, show jumping grid lessons with Amelia and cross country schooling with Maddy.

Brief

This smart, well-moving and well-trained gelding joined us from a respected colleague of ours, Alec Miles, having also been recommended to us by Robert Pickles FBHS.

By the renowned local stallion Ludo and with the official name of “Shake That Booty” he is pretty enough adorn a chocolate box but also delivers the goods, having been trained to Medium level in dressage and successfully competed up to and including BE Novice level in his earlier years.

Bootylish (as we like to call him) has been with us for a couple of years now and has been a great school master. He has also won several dressage and show jumping competitions with Laura Pattison!

Height: 15.2hh
YOB:       2010
Gender: Gelding
Colour:   Skewbald
Breed: Irish Cob
Owner: LHS
Price: £5,500

Champ caught our eye earlier this year on a trip to Ireland, he was standing proud but quiet so of course we rushed over and asked to try him. Amelia rode him for 2 minutes then quickly hopped off  because there were lots of other people watching that were interested in him, when she got off she said to Lucy “this horse is just like Roo, I don’t care how how expensive he is but we’ve got to have him!”.

Thankfully Amelia was right and Champ is a real gem, he has just started in private lessons and higher group levels & everyone that has ridden him has fallen in love. He is forward going, safe and comfortable, horses like him are priceless!

Mr Darcy is a lovely looking small horse who came to us from a known and trusted Irish source, a horse producer who knows the type of horses we like!

He has a lovely, balanced way of going, oozes quality and presence but is also a sensible and straightforward horse to ride.  He has competed in show jumping classes, been cross-country schooling and is a pleasure to hack, so is what we would call in horsey terms a super “all-rounder”!

We’re sure Darcy and his new owner Eleanor will have lots of fun together!

Fraser

Status:  Riding School/For Loan
(Loan is to remain on site and is to known clients only)

Height:  15.2 hh
YOB: 2001
Gender: Gelding
Colour: Tri-Coloured (dark brown, black and white)
Breed: Irish Middleweight
Owner: LHS
Half Sharers: Trudy Gaffney & Rebecca Reynolds
Price: £4,250 (to remain at Lavant House Stables)

The wonderful Fraser has progressed many riders since during the years he has been with us.  Skilled on the flat and over fences, he is fundamentally a sensitive horse which has proven a huge hit for most that have had the pleasure of riding him.

Fraser has also been out and seen much of life, such as competing in all three disciplines, cross-country schooling, hunting and sponsored rides.  His owner of many years, Helena has learnt much with this lovely horse and it is only due to her being off to Uni that this special boy finds himself on the market – ideally to remain at Lavant House Stables, but this is not essential.  The most important thing is to find a suitable new owner who can provide an excellent home to this very special horse.

Good to box, clip, shoe, catch, handle, etc. fully vacinated, sound and fit, Fraser is suitable as a first or second horse to a caring home.

Kevin

Status: Staff

Height: 16.3hh
YOB:  2009
Gender: Gelding
Colour: Iron grey
Breed: Irish Sports Horse
Owner:  Amelia Thomson

This horse is a half-brother to our beloved Pepper who tragically broke his leg April 2013.  So off we went to Ireland and looked at Pepper’s dad and another eight of his offspring.  It was no contest really as Kevin (then named “Donal”) chose us.  He uncannily has a personality like Pepper and when you are riding him sometimes you forget it is not Pepper.  However thankfully Kevin is a lot more comfortable to sit on then Pepper (and clears the jumps too, not Pepper’s forte), he has a temper on him that makes it clear in no uncertain terms when he feels one is being unjust!

On Kevin’s mum side he has some very glamorous relatives, with his great grandsire being the prolific Thoroughbred breeding stallion Sadlers Wells, which also means that Kevin is fairly closely related to the super horse Frankel – not that you would guess looking at him!

Kevin started Eventing last year and took to it like a duck to water, he was easy to ride just weak (we bought him at 15.3hh and within 6 months he had grown a hand!) this year he is 17.1hh, an absolute giant but much stronger, too big for Amelia really but she is smitten and would never give him up! Good luck this year, an exciting future awaits these two…

Q

Status: Staff

Height: 16.2hh
YOB: 2008
Gender: Gelding
Colour: Skewbald (Tri-coloured)
Breed: Irish 7/8th Thoroughbred
Owner: LHS

Initially purchased for the riding school (mostly because he was so quiet and had a head just like GP – Debbie Wratten’s wonderful horse that used to be with us), on getting Q home from Ireland we realised we had something else entirely.  The elevated steps he revealed bore no resemblence to the rather tense shuffling stride seen at the Goresbridge High Performance Sale.

We should also have taken a closer look at his lineage because this revealed Q is by the renowned TB flat racing stallion Lord of Appeal and his dam sire was the notable TB stallion Over the River who has produced so many top class eventers including Over to You.  We also discovered that Q and Kevin share the same grandsire, so are technically “second cousins”.  With such prestigious thoroughbred breeding behind him, it does make one wonder where his odd colouring and looks came from!

Another oddity with this horse is the horns he has on his forehead – have a look – quite peculiar skull formations.  The bottom line is this horse made a very brief appearance in the riding school before being yanked out by us to professionally compete instead – a rather different future to that initially envisaged for this very talented, if somewhat rather strange looking horse.

Roo

Status: Riding School/For Half Loan
(For loan only to remain at Lavant House Stables)

Height: 15.2 hh
YOB: 2001
Gender: Gelding
Colour: Bay
Breed: Thoroughbred x Irish Draught
Owner: LHS
Loan Owner: Mrs Pauline Kearney

Dear Roo arrived with Fraser and both of these horses have proven to be absolutely irreplaceable.  90% of horse-owners in this country would give their eye-teeth for a Roo (or a Fraser for that matter) because they can do anything, are 100% straightforward to ride, are also lovely on the eye and even lovelier to have around even if just as a friend!  Such a pity we don’t know how they are bred otherwise I am sure LHS would be hot-footing it out to Ireland to buy both parents!

One of those special horse who will always have an owner attached thanks to his wonderful nature and attitude to please. Horses like Roo are like gold dust, an amazing horse who is irreplaceable!

Winston

Status: Riding School/Livery

Height: 16.2hh
YOB: 2005
Gender: Gelding
Colour:  Grey
Breed: Irish Draught (Reg’d)
Loan Owner: Mrs Barbara Griffiths

Lucy picked up the lovely Winston at a horse sales in Ireland in July 2012 along with Jim. Originally from a riding school in Ireland, Winston knows his job and has a lovely temperament to go with it.   Whilst in Ireland he was an up to weight trekking horse, we have found him to be the perfect schoolmaster for teaching people to ride and jump with his consistent rhythm and manner of always looking out for his riders.  He is also well put together enough to make a heavy weight show hunter, so Winston is a multi-talented horse that proves a good horse is pretty much good at anything we ask them to do.
